Summary of thesis

Platform as a Service (PaaS) solutions are changing the way how software is produced, distributed, consumed, and priced. Market analysts are predicting a growing demand for these new types of software platforms, as well as an increasing competition and a market which will be subject to consolidation. Who wins and who loses these competitions is not simply a matter of who has the best technology, it is the combination of technical innovations, a flourishing ecosystem and new revenue models into a new business model. This requires a thorough business model innovation of existing players in the software industry, as well as innovative and effective business models from new players. The doctoral project introduced within the paper at hand aims at developing a design theory for PaaS business models. Therefor different research methods from the information system research area will be applied: Besides a systematic literature review, case study research is applied to investigate the current state and future directions of PaaS solutions. A conjoint analysis is conducted to find out what determines consumers’ choice on PaaS and action design research will serve as a research method for the development of a design theory for design and action. The theoretical and practical contributions of the thesis may serve decision makers as a starting point for their business model innovation plans.
