Speakers

Dr. Johannes Fuchs, University Konstanz

Johannes Fuchs is a research scientist and lecturer at the University of Konstanz. His main research interests are in the area of visual analytics and information visualization with a special focus on data glyph design, visualization for education and quantitative evaluation. Johannes has a PhD in computer science from the University of Konstanz.

Description

The main goal of this seminar is to enable students to expand their understanding of the field of information visualization. To achieve this, we explore the fundamental components of the visualization process, from the data to the human viewer. Therefore, we cover theoretical aspects of data foundations like data types and essential pre-processing steps, as well as certain important facets of human perception. The main part of the seminar will then focus on basic visualization techniques for different classes of data and how these representations can be improved with more advanced methods.

After the theoretic introduction to the topic there will be a practical session afterwards in which students learn how to implement a web-based visualization prototype using the javascript library D3 (data driven documents).
