Enterprise Architecture Management Design:Towards Developing Design Principles and Assessment Metrics

Summary of thesis

Despite the increasing popularity of enterprise architecture management (EAM) in practice, many EAM initiatives do not fully meet the expected targets or even fail. EA frameworks have been suggested as guidelines to EAM implementation, but companies apply very diverse implementation approaches and still struggle with deploying EAM and assessing the effectiveness of their endeavours. This research strives for gaining a broader understanding about EAM adoption, developing EAM principles as well as developing a catalogue of metrics to measure principles and EAM effectiveness. With this dissertation, I aim to answer three main questions: (1) how do companies adopt EAM (EAM design)? (2) What are the main principles in guiding EAM design (EAM principles)? (3) What are the metrics to assess EAM design effectiveness (EAM metrics)? My research contributes to exploring different EAM designs in different organizational contingencies, turning design principles into an effective means to achieve principle-based EAM as well as proposing a generic EAM measurement framework. As implication for practice, my research guides companies in identifying a suitable EAM adoption approach that fits their organizational contingencies, shaping the EA through a set of principles as well as assessing the value of EAM efforts.
